i was five when i figured out that i was on the larger side.

i remember overhearing that i wore a size 6x and knew that the x behind the number changed everything.

a few years later my doctor told my mama that i was pleasingly plump.

i carried that term with me for years and years.

i wore t-shirts over my bathing suits and baggy clothes.

when i was in high school, all my friends could wear the short shorts. and body suits.

my thighs were not fans of that length.  and let's just not talk about the body suits, k?

i remember longing to wear the clothes that everyone else was wearing.

in college, i lost an extreme amount of weight.

and suddenly, i felt i had been granted a golden access card to anything a store could offer me.

herein lies the problem.

for the most part, the fashion industry is shoving lies down the throats of girls.

they are selling less fabric for more money.

all because sex sells.

modesty is a lost art.  

what you wear communicates to the world who you are.

like it or not, how you dress either earns you attention or respect.

i choose respect.

tonight, my high school girls and i started a study on ten things teenage girls need to know.

the first chapter dealt with modesty.

it was title neon purple leggings.

we spent a good deal of time talking about why girls dress the way they do.

and we dove into what God's word says about the way women should dress.

your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. rather, it should be that of your inner self,the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.    ~1 peter 3:3-4

peter specifically addresses the true beauty of a godly woman.  
He emphasizes that real beauty is not something you wear or primp for.
but rather something you are.

modesty is about choosing clothes that intentionally communicate what you want the world to know about you.   ~kate connor

what does your wardrobe tell the world about you? 
is there anything that you need to change about the way you dress?

and i want women to get in there with the men in humility before God, not primping before a mirror or chasing the latest fashions but doing something beautiful for God and becoming beautiful doing it.      ~1 timothy 2:9

i happen to know some high school girls are bright, shining beacons of light for Jesus.

and it just so happens their clothing is a reflection of that.
